Project Overview:

In a recent project in Surrey, BuildView (Worthing Architect worriers) skilfully executed a complex architectural transformation. The focus was on enhancing the dwelling's symmetry and proportionality while adhering to local planning guidelines.

Design Strategy:

Our team introduced two barn-end hip-to-gable extensions, meticulously crafted to balance the massing of the residence. This approach not only achieved an architecturally harmonious appearance but also adhered to the specific requirements of SPD 1.12 and 1.13. The fenestration design played a crucial role in maintaining proportionality, with the glazing thoughtfully matched to the existing features of the house.

Daylight and Sunlight Considerations:

One of the critical aspects of the design was considering the orientation and setback of the dwelling. Our careful planning ensured that there was no adverse impact on daylight or sunlight for the neighbouring buildings, in line with SPD 1.15.

Infill Extension Approach:

The small infill extension we added was strategically designed to avoid any additional works towards the boundary. This careful planning effectively prevented a terracing effect, aligning with SPD 1.21.

Dormer and Roof Design:

The dormers, central to the new barn-end hip-to-gable roof extensions, were designed to present a subservient form, in accordance with SPD 1.23. The roof lights, an essential element visible from the street scene, were placed with a sill level of 1700mm from the finished floor level. This ensured privacy and no overlooking, while also contributing positively to the street scene. The symmetrical placement of these roof lights was a key design consideration, aligning with local guidelines.

Material Consistency:

In all proposed alterations, BuildView like all other Architects in Worthing, ensured the use of matching materials to maintain consistency with the existing structure, as per SPD 1.19.

Local Street scene Contribution:

The design drew inspiration from the numerous examples of roof windows within the immediate local dwellings. This consideration ensured that our project contributed positively to the overall streetscape, aligning with the established character of the area.
